NCAA Football Tickets- Under the Microscope

by Brent Warnken

Every season, it seems as if USC loses a game in which the Trojans are heavily favored. Should head coach Pete Carroll receive the same criticism for losing those games as Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops do for losing bowl games? No. Since the bowl games are higher in profile, loses are magnified. Oklahoma lost five of its past six bowl games, and three of those games were national championship games, so it's going to get more attention.

Ohio State faced the same dilemma. They lost three consecutive bowl games; two were for the national championship. Those loses have led to criticism for Tessel and Stoops, but those two are as secure as any coaches in the country. Get NCAA Football tickets and see coach Carroll lead the Trojans to another BCS title.

The media isn't going to blame both coaches because they deserve credit for getting their teams to BCS bowls and national championship games. Think about it. While Oklahoma lost to Florida in last season's BCS championship game, there were 118 other Football Bowl Subdivision teams that were not playing in that game. Of late, the Trojans have been among the teams on the outside looking in at the title game. Some will blame Carroll for not getting USC to those title games, but do you really want to criticize a coach whose team has won or shared seven straight conference championships? The man is a legend in downtown L.A. for going 34-5 over the past three seasons and who has a three-game winning streak in BCS bowls.

Upsets are bound to happen, even against a powerful team like USC. There is no doubt that the Trojans should have won last season's game against Oregon State, but the Beavers finished the season with a 9-4 record, so the loss was certainly not an embarrassment. Neither was the 33-31 loss in Corvallis in 2006. The 13-9 loss to UCLA that cost USC a shot at the national championship in '06 was not a major shock because upsets occur in rivalry games. The red and gold's loss at Oregon in '07 was not a reflection of Carroll, either. Some will argue that if quarterback Dennis Dixon did not go down in a season-ending knee injury two games later, he would have lead the Ducks to a national championship.

O.K., the '07 loss to the Stanford Cardinals remains a mystery. It definitely was an embarrassment. But, again, who will lash out at Carroll for losing five regular-season games in the past three years? The Trojans are certainly not complaining and the administration at USC knows the coach is a big time money booster. In fact, if you take a look at the past three seasons, only one coach of a major-conference team has lost fewer regular-season games. Can anyone guess who that coach is and how many games he lost? Jim Tressel has lost just three regular-season games in the last three seasons. You can bet that either Carroll or Tressel will most likely lead their team to a national championship this season. Carroll is looking to extend this three consecutive bowl streak.
