Swimming and Acne
by Brittany Race
Ever notice how dry your skin can get after a long day at the pool? Well guess what? The excessive drying of the skin after a dip in the pool actually works to prevent acne!
There are a few simple reasons why swimming can be highly beneficial to your skin:
--The chlorine and other chemicals in the water act as antibacterial agents, killing all the bad, acne-causing bacteria on your skin while simultaneously drying out excess oils.
--If you are swimming in a salt-water pool or the ocean, the salt will also act as a very powerful anti-bacterial, even more so than the chemicals in a chlorine pool! Salt is one of the best agents to prevent infection, and acne is just a minor infections and inflammation of the skin. The salt you are swimming in will help heal that inflammation and prevent future breakouts!
--Being outside in the sun can also have a positive effect of your skin. Like the water, the sun is also doing its part in drying out the skin to remove oils, while at the same time providing healthy amounts of vitamin D! The more vitamins and nutrients your body receives, the easier it is to achieve clear skin! Just be careful not to get TOO much sun!
--The simple physical activity of swimming is highly beneficial to your skin! Your breathing pattern while swimming becomes slower and deeper, which promotes more oxygen being used for each and every breath. This boost of oxygen in the bloodstream causes quick healing of the skin, regeneration of new, healthy skin cells, and faster detoxification of acne-causing bacteria. All in all, if you like swimming, you'll love the added benefit that it helps you to maintain a healthy and acne-free complexion. Just make sure to use a good moisturizer after a swim to keep from getting too dry and flaky!
