NCAA Football Tickets- On the Run

by Brent Warnken

A quick mind and strong arm have been considered a quarterback's greatest assets, right? That might not be the case, at least not in college football. Quarterbacks are relying on their nimble feet, and that was certainly true with most of the quarterbacks who appeared in BCS bowls last season. For example, Penn State's Daryll Clark,, Florida's Tim Tebow, Texas' Colt McCoy, Ohio State's Terrelle Pryor, Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor, and Oklahoma's Sam Bradford have all depended on their feet in those bowl games. They played behind solid to exceptional offensive lines. Get NCAA Football tickets and see your favorite quarterback head up field for a first down.

What about quarterbacks who don't have the luxury of a strong offensive line? What about inexperienced quarterbacks or ineffective lines? These quarterbacks have to be mobile or use their arms to score touchdowns. If they don't, they could be sidelined for the rest of the season due to a severe injury.

Let's take a look at two quarterbacks who played well behind an unproductive offensive line. Last season Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing was sacked a whopping 31 times. He not only survived the season, he thrived by passing for 3,888 yards and 32 touchdowns for an eight-win team. Reesing's arm bailed him out of trouble, but how long can he endure all the vicious hits before he is lost for the season, or even worse, he suffers from a career ending injury? Another quarterback who played well despite his ineffective offensive line was Minnesota's Adam Weber. Although he was dropped 30 times, he still threw for 2,761 yards and 15 TDs. Protection will always be a necessity if the quarterback plans to make it through the season.

Let's take a look at quarterbacks with exceptional running ability who will be playing behind questionable lines. University of Southern Florida's Matt Grothe can run. He will have to since the Bulls are replacing four starters. USF are counting on youngster and a junior transfer to support a line that does not have much depth. Texas A & M's Jerrod Johnson will be on the run this season. In 2008, Aggies quarterbacks were sacked 39 times. West Virginia's Jarrett Brown will have to be nimble in 2009.

The Mountaineers have only one full-time starter returning to the lineup from a year ago. Brown will be scrambling since his team begins a rebuilding phase. The Mountaineers surrendered only 18 sacks last season, but that was with an experienced line and elusive Pat White at quarterback. Brown can run, but he's not nearly as elusive as White.

North Carolina State has three starters returning to the offensive line in 2009. Of course, those starters played a role in allowing 29 sacks last season. Quarterback Russell Wilson rushed for 394 yards last season, and will most likely break 400 this season. Michigan's line did not play well last season. It should be better this season, but how much? The Wolverines' sack total should drop with the athletic Tate Forcier at quarterback. He is way more elusive than predecessor Steve Threet. A mobile quarterback can make big plays by sending receivers down the field, avoiding the rush, then head downfield, gaining a lot of real estate.
