Long-Term Tennis Tactics
by Sabrin Dutta
Do you ever notice how many businesses have long-term 3 or 5 year plans? They do this to figure out where they want to be in the future, so they can figure out the actions that need to be taken now to get them there.
What is your long-term tennis plan? What are your tennis tactics for an upcoming match? Many tennis player's idea of a strategy is to do whatever it takes to beat their next opponent. They might accomplish their plan, but how does this go towards their long-term strategy?
For instance, your one-year plan might be to move up a level within your tennis league. You might realize that you need to come up to net more and that your approach shot needs to have more depth to compete at that level. If you believe in your plan and your tennis tactics, you will be less likely to deviate from them when you lose points, games, set, and even matches while you become comfortable with them.
Pete Sampras changed his backhand from two handed to one handed for the purpose of better preparing him to win at Wimbledon. The change was done relatively late for a fairly accomplished junior, but he stuck with his plan. I'm sure there were some times when it would have been easier for him to hit two-handed backhands and win matches that he was losing, but to his credit his believed in his long-term abilities.
So, before you start thinking about strategy and tactics, think about what your long-term tennis objectives are (1 year or more), and write them down. From there, you can think of shorter term strategies (drills, practice, match strategies) to get you to your objectives. With this knowledge, match day tennis tactics can come about.
