Batting Practice Tips For a Pro Baseball Tryout
by Jeffery Wise
Serious ball players, especially those in high school, are curious about batting practice at a pro baseball tryout. It's exciting to think you may be spotted by a scout and told you have what it takes to play Major League baseball.
I attended such a tryout during my high school days. It was in Tennessee for the Cincinnati Reds. I will always remember it. My teammates and I were psyched. There was one major scout there and he had around five helpers. There were around 150 ball players so it was quite crowded.
We started off warming up, then running the 40-yard dash, followed by infield and outfield drills. Finally came batting practice. Since there were so many of us, there was a long line just to get some batting practice in. The batting practice pitcher was very quick and ready to go. There was no delay. We only got a limited number of pitches to hit too. I remember getting maybe 10 swings of the bat.
If you're planning to attend a pro baseball tryout, I have a few tips for you. First, make sure you're physically and mentally prepared the day before and the morning of the tryout. Sleep well the night before, eat healthy and drink lots of clean water. Visualize yourself hitting the ball exactly the way you want to.
Second, save as much energy as you can for the batting practice portion of the tryout. You need to be able to hit the ball well and hard.
Third, don't be shy or laid back on the field. Make sure you're one of the first in line for batting practice because the pitcher will have better pitches and more patience. The scout will also be watching more intensely and you will be more likely to impress him.
Finally, when it's your turn at bat, get comfortable in the batter's box quickly. You don't have much time so get set fast and try to relax. Hit the ball as solid as you can. Don't try to hit home runs.
My experience was awesome, but a little disappointing. At the end of the tryout the scout basically told us that nobody there had the talent to make it to the Major Leagues and then he walked away.
If that happens to your group, don't worry about it. Keep working hard and striving for your dreams to come true. Practice harder and plan to participate in the next pro tryout in your area. You should have several opportunities a year.
If you know of any scouts in your area, get to know them and swap contact information. If they know you they are more likely to pay attention to your skills and your perseverance will leave a lasting impression. Good networking can do wonders for your baseball career.
